Pool Party Lightning Strike

Maya stood by the edge of the infinity **pool**, clutching her red solo cup like it was a lifeline. The ceramic **sphinx** statue beside her seemed to be judging her outfit—which, compared to the other girls' designer swimsuits, was definitely from last season's Target collection.

"You look like a **zombie**," her best friend Chloe whispered, appearing beside her. "Did you actually sleep last night, or were you doom-scrolling again?"

Maya shrugged. "Both? Probably."

The party was at Jake Henderson's house—freshman class president, swim team captain, and currently shirtless and playing beer pong with his equally perfect friends. Maya had been crushing on him since September, which was embarrassing because he barely knew she existed.

Meanwhile, across the pool, someone was poking at the garden pond's **goldfish** with a plastic sword. The fish darted away, probably wishing they could teleport like Maya did whenever she made eye contact with Jake.

"You should talk to him," Chloe pushed. "Literally everyone knows he likes you."

"Everyone except him," Maya muttered.

Then came the first crack of **lightning**, splitting the sky like something out of a movie. Someone screamed—half excitement, half actual fear—as rain began to fall, huge drops that turned the pool surface into a chaotic dance of ripples.

The party evacuated inside, but Maya lingered, watching the sphinx get soaked in the downpour. Something about it looked kind of perfect now—imperfect, weathered, real.

"Hey." Jake appeared beside her, shaking water from his hair. "You coming in?"

She looked at him—really looked at him. He wasn't perfect up close. His nose was slightly crooked. He had a tiny scar through one eyebrow.

"In a sec," she said. "I like the rain."

He smiled, and it wasn't the practiced smile from his Instagram posts. "Yeah. Me too." He leaned against the wet statue beside her. "That sphinx looks like she's seen some stuff."

Maya laughed—for real this time. "Same, sphinx. Same."

The goldfish in the pond broke the surface, catching a raindrop.

Maybe tonight wasn't going to be a disaster after all.
