Pool Party Apocalypse

Maya stood by the edge of the pool, clutching her red solo cup like a lifeline. The water looked inviting—cool, blue, everything she wasn't feeling inside. Across the deck, Jake was laughing with his friends, his abs on full display. Maya tugged self-consciously at her cover-up.

"Hey, Earth to Maya!" Her best friend Chloe waved a hand in her face. "You've been staring at Jake for, like, five minutes. It's giving stalker vibes."

Maya rolled her eyes. "It's not stalking if he's the only person worth looking at. And anyway, I'm just building up my confidence. Building up my courage. Like... like a pyramid of bravery."

Chloe snorted. "A pyramid? Really? That's the worst analogy I've ever heard, and I heard Toby try to explain why Fortnite is educational."

Maya's stomach did a flip-flop—not the good kind. She'd barely slept last night, doom-scrolling until 3 AM, and now she was operating on pure zombie mode. Her under-eye circles probably had their own postal code by now.

"Whatever," she muttered. "I'm going over there." Before she could chicken out, she started toward Jake.

Halfway there, she remembered: spinach. That stupid spinach artichoke dip at lunch. She'd been so nervous about talking to Jake that she'd practically inhaled it. Had she checked a mirror after? No. No, she had not.

She froze. The riddle of her existence: to talk to Jake or not to talk to Jake? Like some evil sphinx demanding answers she didn't have.

Chloe appeared beside her, phone in hand. "Okay, full disclosure: you have a little green situation between your front teeth. I would've told you sooner, but you were on a mission."

Maya's face burned hotter than the July sun. "And you didn't stop me?!"

"I thought you knew!" Chloe handed her a mirror. "Jake's coming over, by the way."

Maya's heart hammered as Jake approached, dripping wet and smiling. "Hey Maya! You gonna swim or what?"

She met his eyes, spinach be damned. "Yeah," she said, surprising herself. "Yeah, I am."

She dropped the cover-up. The water felt amazing. Jake was already racing her to the other side, and somewhere behind her, Chloe was whooping. Sometimes the scariest moments were the ones worth showing up for—even with spinach in your teeth.
