Pool Party Apocalypse
Maya felt like a total zombie. Three hours of sleep after binge-wawning The Walking Dead until 3 AM would do that to you. But she couldn't bail on Stacy's pool party today. Not when Ethan finally might notice her.
The backyard was already packed when she arrived. Stacy's parents had gone all out - fairy lights strung up, Bluetooth speaker blasting Doja Cat, a table loaded with chips and those fancy sparkling waters that everyone pretended actually tasted good. The pool itself glowed an inviting blue, with about a dozen people already splashing around.
"Maya! You made it!" Stacy called, waving her over. "Come swim!"
Maya hesitated. She'd spent forty-five minutes on her makeup this morning, carefully applying the winged eyeliner she'd watched ten tutorials to perfect. If she got in the pool, she'd wash it all off.
"In a bit," she said, forcing a smile. "Just got here."
She spotted Ethan near the snack table, looking unfairly good even in basic swim trunks and a faded band tee. This was it. Her moment. She started toward him, rehearsing casual opening lines in her head. *Hey Ethan, crazy weather we're having. No, that's dumb. Hey, having fun? Better. Still basic though.*
Then she heard it.
A low, guttural sound from the trees behind the fence. Like a cross between a growl and something from one of those zombie shows she'd been marathoning.
The music kept blasting. Nobody else seemed to notice. Maya blinked, wondering if her sleep deprivation was making her hallucinate. But then she heard it again - louder this time.
"Yo, did you guys hear that?" she asked, voice slightly higher than usual.
"Hear what?" Ethan turned toward her, and oh god, this was it, he was actually looking at her, but now she had to sound crazy in front of him.
"There's something out there-"
CRASH.
A massive shape burst through the wooden fence, splintering the boards like they were toothpicks. A bear. An actual, real-life bear, probably three hundred pounds of fur and muscle and oh my god what was happening.
Screams erupted. People scrambled in every direction. Someone knocked over the snack table, sending bags of chips flying. The bear reared up on its hind legs, letting out a roar that vibrated in Maya's chest.
She stood frozen, transfixed, feeling very much like that zombie she'd joked about being earlier. This couldn't be real. This was suburban Ohio. Things like this didn't happen here.
Then Ethan grabbed her hand.
"Move! NOW!"
They scrambled toward the house together, along with a dozen other terrified partygoers. The bear, apparently just as confused by this development, stumbled toward the pool. It slipped on the wet concrete and with a massive splash, landed right in the deep end.
Inside the house, someone called animal control. Through the sliding glass doors, they watched in disbelief as the bear swam lazy circles in Stacy's pool, looking remarkably unbothered by its unexpected dip.
"Is this actually happening?" Maya breathed. Her hand was still in Ethan's, and she realized she wasn't imagining the way his thumb was tracing circles on her palm.
Ethan laughed, shaky but real. "I've been to some wild pool parties, but this is definitely a first."
Maya's heart was still pounding, but not entirely from fear anymore. Some parties you remember forever. Some boys notice you in the craziest ways. And sometimes, when a literal bear crashes your pool party, you find yourself holding hands with your crush while watching said bear do laps like it owns the place.
Life was weird. But honestly? She wasn't complaining.
