Perfect Hair, Perfect Storm
Maya's third attempt at DIY blonde highlights had turned her hair into what she lovingly called 'strawberry catastrophe' and what her brother called 'you look like a highlighter threw up on you.' Hence the oversized bucket hat pulled down to her eyebrows, even though it was eighty degrees and the humidity was doing something truly terrible to her self-esteem.
She was sitting at the padel courts watching Ethan play—because apparently this was her life now, pretending to be interested in a sport she couldn't pronounce correctly until three weeks ago. Padel was like tennis but squished, with glass walls and people who shouted 'VAMOS!' too aggressively.
'You coming to try?' Ethan asked, jogging over. His hair was perfect, of course. Dark curls that did that effortless thing Maya's hair had never achieved even on its best day. He was wearing this backwards baseball cap that made him look like every Tumblr heartthrob from 2014, but like, in a good way.
'Soon,' Maya lied. 'Just taking in the technique.'
The sky chose that moment to crack open. Lightning splintered across the clouds—actual, dramatic lightning that looked like something out of a movie. Everyone scattered. Ethan grabbed Maya's arm. 'Come on!'
They sprinted toward the covered area, rain already plastering Maya's shirt to her back. And then—because the universe hated her specifically—a gust of wind caught her bucket hat. It tumbled off her head, rolling away like a rejected wheel of cheese.
'Maya, wait—' Ethan started.
But she was already chasing it, her strawberry catastrophe hair finally free. Lightning flashed again, illuminating everything she'd been hiding for weeks—the uneven patches, the accidental orange splotch near her left ear, the way her hair frizzed instantly in the rain.
She snatched the hat and shoved it back on, heart hammering. When she turned around, Ethan was standing there watching her, rain dripping from that perfect hair.
'Your hair,' he said. 'I didn't know you dyed it.'
Maya waited for the laugh. The 'what happened' comment. The awkward silence.
'It's... a work in progress.' She gestured vaguely at her hat.
'It looks sick,' Ethan said. 'Like, actually cool. Not even lying.'
Maya blinked. 'What?'
'The orange part? It's giving iconic disaster energy.' He grinned. 'We should all be that brave.'
The rain kept pouring. The padel courts were empty. Maya thought about her hair, the disaster she'd been hiding, the way she'd spent three weeks in a bucket hat in July. And then—because sometimes you just have to do the thing—she pulled the hat off again.
Lightning flashed overhead, making everything bright and strange and sudden. Her hair was a mess. Her shirt was soaked. Ethan was still grinning at her like she'd just done something incredible instead of just existing with bad highlights.
'You gonna show me how to play this sport or what?' Maya asked.
Ethan's grin widened. 'Finally. But fair warning—I'm going easy on you.'
'In your dreams, Torres.'
The storm kept rolling. Maya's hair stayed a disaster. And somehow, for the first time in three weeks, she didn't care at all.
