Penny and the Water Secret

runningspywater

Penny was the best spy in the whole neighborhood. At least, that's what she told everyone. She had spy glasses made from toilet paper tubes and a secret spy notebook. Every day after school, she went running through the tall grass behind her house, spying on squirrels and birds and anything that moved.

One hot afternoon, Penny was running beside the old creek when something made her stop. The water was sparkling, but not like usual. It was glowing! Penny crept closer, her spy heart beating fast. She peeked through a bush and couldn't believe her eyes.

Tiny blue creatures were dancing on the water's surface! They were no bigger than her thumb, with wings like dragonflies and smiles that shone like stars. They were skimming across the water, leaving ripples that turned into rainbows.

"I must be the first person ever to spy on water sprites!" Penny whispered. But then she noticed something sad. A plastic bottle was floating toward the creatures, and they looked scared.

Penny remembered what her mother said: Being a spy means watching carefully, but being a friend means helping when things go wrong.

She grabbed a long branch and reached out. The water sprites watched her with their big blue eyes. Penny carefully fished out the bottle, then a wrapper, then a soggy bag. She worked until the water was clean again.

The smallest sprite flew over and landed on Penny's nose. It giggled—a sound like water running over smooth stones. Then all the sprites danced around her in a sparkling whirlwind.

From that day on, Penny was still a spy. But now she spied on things that needed help. And every time she visited the creek, the water would shimmer extra bright, just for her friend.
