Papaya Truths

Maya's kitchen smelled like tropical failure. Her third attempt at a papaya-vitamin super smoothie sat on the counter, looking suspiciously like chunky pink sludge.

"Gross," she muttered, scrolling through her phone while spooning another dubious sip. The vitamin supplements her mom bought promised "radiant skin and unstoppable energy" — so far, mostly just bloating and the fear that papaya would become her personality.

She refreshed Instagram for the third time in five minutes. Classic spy behavior, except instead of national secrets, she was hunting for evidence that Liam had noticed her existence. They'd shared exactly one conversation (about a missing calculator) back in May, and she'd been analyzing his sporadically posted Stories like they contained the meaning of life.

Buster, the family's ancient golden retriever, nudged her knee with his wet nose. He'd been her emotional support animal since before emotional support animals were cool.

"You're right, Buster," Maya sighed, scratching behind his ears. "This is pathetic."

Her best friend Jasmine's text popped up: "Liam just posted at the beach 🏖️"

Maya's fingers moved before her brain could intervene. Double tap. Heart emoji.

Ten seconds later, her phone buzzed. A DM from Liam.

"Maya? Is that your dog in your profile pic? The golden one?"

She stared at the screen. Not "your papaya smoothies look weird" or "I saw you creeping on my story." He wanted to talk about Buster.

"Yeah! That's Buster. He's 12 and obsessed with tennis balls."

"No way. My golden, Luna, is 11. Do you ever go to the dog park on Elm?"

Maya's heart did this embarrassing flutter thing. Her mom knocked on the doorframe. "Honey, how's your health kick going?"

Maya looked at her half-finished papaya disaster, her phone lighting up with another message from Liam, and Buster's expectant face. She realized something sudden and true: she'd been trying to upgrade herself like software, convinced she needed vitamins and secret agendas to be worth noticing. But Liam had noticed her because of a dog photo. Something real.

"The papaya thing?" Maya grinned, pouring the rest into Buster's bowl. "I think I'm over it." Buster wagged his tail, thrilled to be part of her reinvention project.

Some transformations weren't about becoming someone new. They were about becoming who you actually were — papaya-free and completely fine with it.
