Papaya Thunder

Maya clutched her iPhone like a lifeline, screen illuminating her anxious face in the darkness. Another party where she didn't quite belong, watching from the edges while everyone else seemed to know the secret script of teenage existence. She'd been scrolling for twenty minutes, pretending to be deeply fascinated by absolutely nothing.

"Hey, want some?"

Maya jumped. Jay stood there, holding out a bowl of papaya chunks. Cute Jay from AP Bio who always smelled like rain and cedar. The guy she'd been lowkey obsessing over since September.

"Uh, sure?" She reached for a piece, embarrassed by how her fingers trembled.

"My mom's obsessed with 'exotic fruits,'" Jay said, rolling his eyes. "She thinks papaya's gonna transform our lives or something. It's... different, right?"

Maya bit into it. Sweet, musky, totally unexpected. "It's honestly kind of fire."

Jay grinned, and something in Maya's chest did this little lightning-strike thing that had nothing to do with the weather. Then his face lit up. "Oh my god, have you seen the back deck? The storm's literally going crazy out there."

They ran together—okay, Maya stumbled after him—bursting through the sliding doors just as lightning cracked the sky open, turning everything electric violet for one heartbeat. Rain sheeted down, and Jay threw his head back, laughing as water plastered his hair to his forehead.

"You're absolutely deranged," Maya called over the thunder, but she was grinning too hard to care.

"Live a little, Maya!" He spun around, arms wide. "Nobody's watching except the universe!"

So she did. She tilted her face up, let the downpour soak her mascara (screw it), and somewhere between the lightning flashes and the papaya-aftertaste still lingering on her tongue, Maya realized something: the secret script didn't exist. Everyone was just running alongside each other, pretending they knew the choreography.

Her iPhone buzzed in her pocket—probably her mom asking when she'd be home. She ignored it.

"THIS IS ACTUALLY ATE," she shouted at the storm, and when Jay grabbed her hand, Maya squeezed back like it was the most natural thing in the world.
