Papaya & the Mascot Mishap
Maya smoothed down her lucky beanie—the one with the tiny propeller on top—and took a deep breath. Junior year was supposed to be her glow-up era, but so far, it was mostly just awkward pauses and overthinking every social interaction.
"You good, bestie?" Jordan asked, spinning around in the cafeteria chair.
"Just preparing myself for lunch table politics," Maya muttered, stabbing at the strange fruit on her tray. Her mom had gone through a 'tropical phase' at the grocery store, which meant Maya was now the proud owner of a papaya that looked like it belonged in a science experiment rather than a high school cafeteria.
Meanwhile, Sydney—the human embodiment of having it all together—sat three tables away, surrounded by her squad like she was the sun and they were just planets caught in her orbit.
Then disaster struck. The school mascot, Barnaby the Bear, lumbered in for some promotional lunch appearance. The costume was ancient, the head wobbled dangerously, and whoever was inside had clearly never been told how to walk in a giant fuzzy suit.
Maya watched in horror as the bear tripped over someone's backpack, did a chaotic pirouette, and crashed directly into Sydney's table. Fruit salad everywhere. The bear's head rolled off like something from a horror movie.
Underneath? Jason. THE Jason. Swim team captain, Maya's crush since forever, currently looking like he wanted to dissolve into the cafeteria floor.
Their eyes met. He had spinach stuck in his teeth—probably from lunch—and his face was the exact shade of Maya's papaya.
Then he did something unexpected. He pointed at Maya's propeller hat and cracked up. "Nice hat. At least someone's winning today."
Something loosened in Maya's chest. She found herself laughing too, actually laughing, not her usual nervous giggle. Junior year might still be messy, but maybe—just maybe—that was the point.
She took a bite of papaya. Not terrible, actually. A little weird, but definitely worth trying.
