Papaya Sunset at the Pool
Maya felt like a walking zombie after finals week—her brain fried, her existence reduced to studying, sleeping, and barely functioning. But tonight, Jordan's pool party loomed like a social make-or-break moment. She couldn't miss it. Not when Tyler might be there.
She stood by the snack table, clutching a red solo cup filled with water, feeling painfully awkward in her neon orange tank top that screamed "look at me" when all she wanted to do was disappear. Why had she worn it? It was like she was asking for attention she didn't know how to handle.
"Hey, try this." Jordan's cousin Sofia shoved a plate of exotic fruit toward her. "My mom's papaya recipe. It's literally life-changing."
Maya took a bite, expecting something gross, but—woah. The papaya was incredible, sweet and creamy and totally unfamiliar. She reached for more, but her cup of water tipped at the same second, splashing all over her orange shirt.
The cup hit the ground with a plastic clatter. Water everywhere. Her face burned. Without thinking, she took off running toward the back gate, mortified.
"Wait!" Tyler's voice behind her.
She kept running, past the pool, through the side yard, until she reached the sidewalk. Only then did she stop, breathing hard, heart pounding like she'd just finished a 5K instead of running from embarrassment.
Tyler jogged up, looking surprisingly amused. "You okay?"
"I'm a disaster," she groaned. "Spilled water all over myself at a party. Classic Maya move."
"Actually," he said, "it was kind of awesome. You just owned that moment. Plus, orange is definitely your color."
Maya stared at him. He was smiling. Actually smiling.
"Want to try the papaya again?" he asked. "I saved you some."
And just like that, she wasn't a zombie anymore. She was alive, awkward moments and all.
