Papaya Sunset at Miller's Pond

Maya's rainbow bucket hat sat crooked on her head, a desperate shield against the judging eyes at Tyler's pool party. She'd been **running** from social situations all summer — literally, joining track team just to have a valid excuse to bail. But somewhere between the Uber ride over and standing here in her too-small bikini, she'd forgotten how to breathe.

"Yo Maya, you gonna swim or just stand there looking like a gay emoji?" Chen yelled from the diving board, splashing water everywhere. The friend group erupted into laughter. Maya's face burned hotter than the July sun.

Then she saw it — a bowl of **papaya** chunks on the snack table, looking exotic and out of place among the Doritos and pizza rolls. Sarah, Tyler's girlfriend, was eating it with this infuriating effortless grace, like she wasn't terrified of saying the wrong thing.

"It's actually fire," Sarah said, catching Maya staring. "Wanna try?"

Maya hesitated. The old Maya would've mumbled something about being allergic and fled to the bathroom. But new Maya — the one who'd been practicing confidence in her bathroom mirror — took a step forward.

"Sure," she said, and her voice only shook a little.

The **swimming** pool water sparkled behind them, blue and inviting. Somewhere inside her, something clicked. She didn't need to run anymore. She could just exist, awkwardness and all.

"It's sweet," Sarah said. "Like, surprisingly good. Kinda like how I thought you'd be stuck-up but you're actually chill."

Maya's rainbow hat finally felt like less of a shield and more of... well, just a hat. She took a piece of papaya, popped it in her mouth, and for the first time all summer, she didn't want to run anywhere.
