Papaya Sunset
Maya's palms were sweating like crazy, which was honestly gross but also peak irony because here she was, at the most chill beach bonfire of junior year, still nervous about talking to him. Kai sat cross-legged in the sand, passing around slices of papaya like it was the most normal thing in the world.
"Try it," he said, holding out a wedge. "It's like if a mango and a melon had a glow-up."
Maya's brain short-circuited. This was it—the moment. She'd been crushing on Kai since September, watching him from across the cafeteria, rewatching his Instagram stories like a total creep. Now he was inches away, offering her fruit.
Her palm literally ached from how much she'd been squeezing it together, nervous energy radiating through her whole body. She took the papaya, fingers brushing against his for a microsecond that felt like an hour.
"It's... different," she managed, after chewing slowly. Actually good, but her taste buds were too preoccupied with the fact that Kai was looking directly at her.
"Yeah?" His smile did things to her stomach that weren't medically recommended. "My mom's obsessed with it. Says it's a superfood."
Maya's phone buzzed in her pocket. Probably the group chat blowing up—she'd told Sasha and Jada she was finally making her move. They'd probably bet on how badly she'd crash and burn.
"You okay?" Kai tilted his head, actually noticing her for the first time all night. "You seem stressed."
She almost laughed. Because the thing was, she wasn't the one who should've been stressed. The real drama was happening back at the picnic tables where her ex-best friend Chloe was currently trying to outfox everyone with her fake surprise appearance. Chloe, who'd ghosted their friend group for the popular crowd sophomore year, was suddenly back and acting like nothing happened. Classic Chloe move—sly like a fox, always working some angle.
"I'm good," Maya said, and for the first time all night, she actually meant it. She took another bite of papaya, sweet and weird and perfect. "Just thinking about how sophomore year Chloe tried to convince everyone that coconut water cured literally everything."
Kai laughed, and it was this warm, genuine sound that made something in her chest loosen. "Oh my god, I remember that. She tried to sell us all on her pyramid scheme."
The ocean breeze picked up, carrying away the rest of her nerves. Maybe this night wasn't going to be a disaster after all. Maybe sometimes, you just had to take the weird fruit offering and see what happened.
