Papaya Summer Secrets

watercablepapayavitaminspy

Maya stood by the pool, clutching her Vitaminwater like a lifeline. The end-of-summer party raged around her — music thumping, people screaming into the deep end, someone definitely doing a keg stand in the shallow end. Typical suburban chaos. She'd been standing there for twenty minutes, trying to look chill but mostly feeling like a spy observing normal human behavior from behind enemy lines.

Across the pool, Jake — the Jake who'd sat behind her in bio last year, who always smelled like cedar and complicated answers — was animatedly describing something to a group of guys. Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to organs existed. This was her chance. Her mom had practically pushed her out the door with her weird papaya salad that nobody ate but everyone complimented because Maya's family was "so cultural" and it made people feel sophisticated.

"Hey, Maya!" Jake caught her eye and waved her over. "I was just telling everyone about your cable setup. How you rigged that whole gaming tournament thing."

Oh no. The cable incident. Last month, when her dad refused to pay for decent internet, Maya had MacGyvered this insane network using like seven different cables and somehow hosted a district-wide gaming championship. She'd thought it was her shame masterpiece. Now it was her social currency?

"It was nothing," she said, approaching the group. "Just some cable management and creative problem-solving."

"Dude, that was legendary," someone said. "You're literally a tech genius."

Jake was looking at her. Actually looking at her, not past her, not through her. "So, I heard you make this papaya stuff that's actually amazing?"

Her mom's papaya salad. The one she'd forced Maya to bring in Tupperware that was currently sitting on the snack table like a cultural ambassador.

"It's... yeah, it's my family's recipe."

"We should try it," Jake said. "Right now. Like, right now."

And somehow, fifteen minutes later, she was sitting on the pool edge with Jake and half the popular crowd, eating papaya salad with their fingers because nobody had thought to bring spoons, and Jake was laughing so hard at her story about the cable fiasco that actual water came out of his nose.

"You're hilarious," he said, wiping his face. "How did I not know this about you?"

Maya looked at her Vitaminwater, now lukewarm and forgotten. She looked at the papaya container, empty. She looked at Jake, who was still laughing.

"I was saving it," she said.

The spy game was over. She was done watching from the sidelines.
