Papaya Summer Protocol

The uniform hat was the final betrayal. Bright orange, with "TROPICAL DREAMS" embroidered across the front like a curse Marcus couldn't escape.

"You look ridiculous," said Leo, gesturing with his phone. "My followers need to see this."

"Don't you dare." Marcus adjusted the hat, already sweating through his polyester uniform shirt. It was bad enough that his first real job was slinging smoothies at the community pool. It was worse that his crush, Jasmine, spent every Wednesday afternoon swimming laps while he mentally rehearsed ways to talk to her that didn't involve vitamin supplements.

That was the other problem. Marcus had accidentally told Jasmine he was "super into nutrition" to impress her, and now he had to maintain the bit. The reality: his nutritional expertise ended at knowing gummy vitamins tasted like candy.

"Order up," his aunt called from the prep station. "Table seven. Papaya special."

The Papaya Protocol. Customers rarely ordered it, and Marcus had definitely never tried it. Papaya sounded like something grandmothers ate while discussing fiber intake.

But then Jasmine climbed out of the pool, water dripping from her dark curls, and headed straight for his stand. Marcus's brain short-circuited.

"Hey Marcus!" She smiled, and he forgot how to speak human language. "What's good here?"

"Uh. Everything?"

"Lame answer." Leo, of course, appeared from nowhere. "Hey Jasmine, you should know Marcus has never even tried papaya. Not exactly a nutrition expert, huh?"

Jasmine raised an eyebrow. "Really?"

Marcus's face burned. "I—"

"Bet you won't try it." Leo grinned like this was the greatest moment of his life. "Big strong Marcus, scared of a little fruit? That's straight up bull, man."

Something snapped. Maybe it was the hat. Maybe it was Leo saying 'bull' like he was in a rap video. Maybe it was Jasmine watching with those annoyingly pretty eyes.

Marcus grabbed a spoon, dug into the papaya mash, and ate it.

It wasn't bad. It was weird—kind of like cantaloupe but softer, with this peppery aftertaste that shouldn't work but did.

"Well?" Jasmine asked.

Marcus swallowed. "It's... actually pretty good?"

"See?" Leo looked disappointed. "That wasn't even dramatic."

Jasmine laughed. "Okay, that was kinda brave. I hate papaya."

"Wait, you recommended it?"

"No, I wanted to see if you'd actually try it." She winked. "You passed. I'll take a mango smoothie instead."

Later, as Marcus blended mango while Jasmine sat at the counter talking about swim team, he realized something. The hat was still ridiculous. Leo was still annoying. Papaya was still weird. But sometimes the most embarrassing moments became the ones that didn't suck.

And maybe, just maybe, fake it 'til you make it wasn't completely terrible advice.
