Papaya Summer Friday
Jordan's shift at Tropical Treats was supposed to be chill—just him, the AC, and TikTok on his iphone between customers. Until Emma walked in. Emma, who sat two rows behind him in AP Bio and never seemed to notice his existence.
"Can I get..." She squinted at the menu, confusion knitting her eyebrows together. "What even is papaya?"
Jordan's palm went sweaty against the counter. This was it—his chance to finally say something that wasn't just "here's your smoothie." He cleared his throat. "It's like if a melon and a mango had a baby. Sweet but kinda... musky? I can give you a sample."
Her eyes lit up. "Yes! I'm trying to expand my food horizons. My dog ate my homework and I need good karma."
Jordan froze. Was she flirting? Was this a joke? His brain short-circuited. "That's... rough? For the homework, I mean. Not the dog. Dogs are cool."
*Internal screaming.*
He sliced through the papaya with hands that definitely weren't shaking. The fruit hit her cup like a baseball landing in a glove—smooth, perfect, totally normal.
"Here," he managed. "First taste's free."
Emma took the cup, their fingers brushing for approximately 0.03 seconds. Jordan's entire nervous system lit up like a Christmas tree.
She took a sip. Her eyes widened. Then her nose scrunched up. Then she giggled. "Oh my god. It's... interesting. Like, really interesting."
"That's what everyone says," Jordan laughed, some of the tension finally releasing. "My boss calls it an 'acquired taste.'"
"Well, I acquired it." She pulled out her phone. "What's your Insta? I have to document this moment. My first papaya experience. Very life-changing stuff."
Jordan rattled off his handle, still processing that Emma—the Emma—wanted to follow him. As she walked out, she turned back.
"Hey, thanks for the adventure. Maybe next time you can convince me to try durian."
"Only if you're brave enough."
She winked. Jordan exhaled, realized he'd been holding his breath for way too long, and immediately texted his best friend: *EMMA FROM BIO JUST TALKED TO ME FOR 5 MINUTES STRAIGHT AND I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING WEIRD.*
His palm was still sweaty. The papaya samples were definitely overpriced. But some Fridays? They changed everything.
