Papaya Summer Fox

Maya's palms were sweating so bad she could practically water plants with them. Which would be ironic, because her mom's entire backyard was basically a tropical sanctuary complete with an actual papaya tree that Maya had to help water every summer.

"You're doing that thing again," said Jay, her best friend since sixth grade, currently sprawled on a lounge chair like he owned the place. "That overthinking everything until you combust thing."

Maya wiped her hands on her shorts. "I'm not overthinking. I'm processing."

"You're panicking because Leo's coming tonight and you still haven't figured out how to be normal around him."

"I am normal around him!"

"Last time you literally hi-fived him and said 'good job existing.'"

Maya groaned, letting her head fall into her hands. The papaya tree swayed gently in the evening breeze, its broad leaves casting dancing shadows across the patio. This was supposed to be the perfect end-of-summer party. Music, snacks, the fact that her mom had finally agreed to let them have the backyard to themselves. But the real test was Leo, the new guy from theater who'd somehow become both Maya's biggest crush and her biggest anxiety.

Then she saw him walking through the gate, that easy smile that made her stomach do full-on gymnastics routines. And trailing behind him was—

"Is that Sophie?" Maya hissed, her heart dropping like a stone.

Sophie, aka 'the fox' of sophomore year, the girl who could charm her way out of detention and somehow always ended up with whoever she wanted. Sophie with her perfect hair and her perfect laugh and her perfect ability to make everyone else feel like background characters in her movie.

"Maybe they're just friends," Jay offered, but his tone said yeah right.

Maya grabbed a slice of papaya from the fruit platter, needing something to do with her hands. She was not going to let Sophie fox her way into stealing Leo. Not tonight. Not when Maya had spent literally three weeks planning the perfect playlist and a whole speech about how much she loved Leo's theater debut and okay, maybe it was a lot.

But as she watched Leo laugh at something Sophie said, that easy genuine laugh that made his nose crinkle, Maya felt something shift. Maybe this wasn't about winning. Maybe it was about being brave enough to show up, sweaty palms and all, and let whatever happen, happen.

"You gonna hide over here all night or actually talk to him?" Jay asked softly.

Maya took a deep breath, wiped her hands one last time, and walked toward them.

"Hey," she said, and her voice didn't even shake. "Want some papaya? It's actually pretty good."

Leo's face lit up. "I was hoping you'd say that."

And maybe Sophie wasn't the villain here. Maybe she was just another person trying to figure it all out, same as Maya, same as everyone standing in this backyard on the last night of summer, palms sweating, hearts racing, waiting to see what would happen next.
