Papaya Summer Cat-astrophe

The pool party at Jessica's house was supposed to be my moment. You know that feeling when you've been lowkey crushing on someone since seventh grade, and suddenly there's a chance they might actually notice you exist? That was me with Tyler. I'd been planning my outfit for days, trying to hit that perfect balance between 'I just threw this on' and 'I definitely have my life together.'

Then came the papaya incident.

I was trying to be all healthy and sophisticated, eating this exotic fruit like some Instagram wellness influencer. But papaya, if you've never experienced it, is literally the weirdest texture on earth. It's like eating sweet sand. I was sitting on the edge of the pool, minding my own business, trying to figure out if I was supposed to eat the seeds or what, when BAM.

My cat Luna — who my mom had somehow let outside despite her being strictly an indoor creature — came tearing out of nowhere like she'd just seen a ghost. She jumped straight onto my lap, knocking my papaya bowl into the air. It was like slow motion. I watched this fruit do a perfect arc before splashing into the pool right as Tyler was doing laps underwater.

He came up sputtering, covered in sticky orange slime, looking around like wtf just happened. Everyone was staring. I wanted the ground to open up and swallow me whole.

But then Tyler started laughing. Like, actually laughing. And then everyone else joined in. Luna purred on my lap like she'd just accomplished something legendary. I looked at Tyler, covered in papaya, and realized that maybe perfect moments aren't about being perfect at all.

'So,' Tyler said, wiping fruit from his forehead. 'Is this a local tradition or just my lucky day?'

I shrugged, finally letting myself laugh too. 'Just trying to keep things interesting.'

Sometimes the most embarrassing moments become the best stories. And okay, maybe Tyler did end up asking for my number later. But that's a story for another time.
