Papaya Summer and the Fraying Cable

cablepapayacatpadeliphone

The charging cable frayed at exactly the wrong moment—right before Mia's summer party. Of course. I'd been waiting for this all week, and now my iPhone was at 4%.

"You good?" Carlos asked, already holding his padel racket like he owned the place. The new kid. The one who'd somehow infiltrated our friend group in three days flat.

"Yeah, just... cable issues," I muttered, shoving the useless wire into my pocket.

Mia's backyard was already buzzing. Kids from school, people I barely recognized, and somehow Carlos looked more comfortable than I felt. My cat Mango would've handled this better. At least she knew how to land on her feet.

"Try this," Mia said, pressing a cup into my hand. "It's papaya juice. My mom's obsessed with it being 'exotic.'"

I took a sip. It was... weird. Not bad, just different. Like everything this summer.

"So, padel after this?" Carlos asked, like it was the most natural thing in the world. "My dad's got a court nearby."

I nodded before I could overthink it. Padel. Me. The kid who got picked last for everything in gym. But Carlos made it sound like we'd been doing this forever.

My iPhone buzzed in my pocket—4%. Just enough for one text. I pulled it out, thumbs hovering over the screen. Who would I even text? The friends who'd ghosted me since school ended? The crush who'd left me on read for three weeks?

"Earth to Sam," Mia said, laughing. "You good?"

"Yeah," I said, actually meaning it this time. "Just thinking about... papaya juice and padel. Weird summer combo."

"That's the point," Carlos said, clinking his plastic cup against mine. "Weird combos are the best ones."

And maybe that was it. Maybe this summer wasn't about fitting into the old patterns. Maybe it was about frayed cables and exotic fruits and sports I'd never played before. Maybe it was about letting new combinations happen.

My iPhone died as I took another sip. I didn't even care.
