Papaya Summer
The water in the Hendersons' pool glittered like something out of a TikTok edit, and I was fully spiraling. My crush, Marcus, was lounging on a pool float like he owned the place, while I stood awkwardly by the snack table clutching a papaya like it was a lifeline.
"You gonna eat that, or just stare at it?" Jenna asked, sliding up beside me. Jenna, whose Instagram aesthetic was literally perfect, while mine was a constant rotation of bad angles and worse decisions.
"I'm thinking about it," I lied. I'd never even tried papaya before. It seemed like something a cool person would eat, someone who didn't overanalyze every single interaction at parties.
Their dog, Golden Retriever energy embodied, bounded over and nearly knocked into me. Caught off guard, I fumbled the papaya. It splashed into the pool, bobbing near Marcus's float. My soul left my body. Capital F embarrassment.
Marcus sat up, pushing his sunglasses up his nose. "Is that... fruit?"
"Papaya," I managed, face burning. "My bad."
But then he laughed, not mean but actually amused. "Bold choice. 10/10 for originality."
Something shifted. The tension I'd been carrying all summer loosened. We ended up talking for an hour poolside while the sun dipped down, discussing everything from his weird obsession with his pet goldfish (named Neptune, low-key adorable) to how much we both hated gym class.
Later, Jenna texted me: "ur welcome for the wingman situation. also marcus was def checking u out."
I smiled at my phone, the awkward papaya moment somehow transformed into something else entirely. Maybe being cool wasn't about pretending to like exotic fruit or hiding in bathroom stalls to overanalyze conversations. Maybe it was about letting yourself be a little messy, a little unexpected.
The dog padded over and rested his head on my knee. I scratched behind his ears, feeling something like confidence settle in my chest. Not perfection, not even close, but something real.
