Papaya Summer

The **pool** water shimmered like liquid diamond in the July heat, but Maya's stomach did nervous backflips. This was Jessica's party—the Jessica who'd somehow transformed from band camp buddy to TikTok royalty over summer break.

"You coming in or what?" Jessica called, surrounded by her new squad. They all wore matching bikinis. Maya wore her one-piece from last year, the one her mom said was "practical."

"Yeah, just... gotta take my **vitamin** first." Maya fished the gummy from her pocket. The new squad laughed. Not mean laughter, just—why is this girl taking vitamins at a pool party?

Maya's **friend** Sarah caught her eye from across the pool. They'd been inseparable since seventh grade, until Sarah started changing. New clothes. New friends. The silent text messages during sleepovers.

Jessica's mom appeared with a fruit platter. "Who wants **papaya**? It's organic!" The platter sat untouched, the exotic fruit looking alien among the chips and soda. Maya took a piece, mostly because nobody else would.

"You actually eat that?" Sarah appeared beside her, drops of water tracing patterns down her arms. "Weirdo."

"It's actually pretty—" Maya started, but Sarah was already turning away, heading back to the popular crowd.

Then: a rustle from the bushes. A flash of orange. A actual **fox**, sleek and brazen, trotted onto the patio like he owned the place. Everyone screamed. Jessica's dad dropped his burger. The fox made straight for—yup—the papaya platter, grabbed the biggest slice in its jaws, and bolted.

"Did that just—" Sarah breathed, cracking up. "A fox? Seriously?"

Maya started laughing too, couldn't stop. Sarah was laughing with her, not at her, like old times. The popular squad seemed less intimidating somehow. Even Jessica was giggling, taking a video.

"My mom's going to lose it," she said. "That papaya was expensive."

"Worth it," Maya said, and Sarah nodded.

"Yeah," Sarah said, and for a second, the old Sarah was back. "Totally worth it."

They sat on the pool edge, feet in the water, eating the remaining papaya while the fox watched from the bushes. Some things changed, sure. But some things—like papaya-stealing foxes and best friends who laughed at the same absurdity—those stayed.
