Papaya Summer

The pool party at Jenna's house was supposed to be mid, but honestly? I was lowkey panicking. My crush Marco was there, shirtless and dripping wet, looking like he walked straight out of a TikTok edit. I'd been harboring this massive crush since seventh period English, and now here I was, standing awkwardly by the snack table in my one-piece like I wasn't ready to absolutely perish.

"You gonna get in or what?" My bestie Dalia appeared beside me, already in her bikini, living her best life. "Everyone's swimming. Even Tyler from math class finally took his glasses off."

I bit my lip. "I don't know. What if—"

"What if what? You're overthinking again." Dalia grabbed my hand. "Come on. I'll go in with you."

The water was perfect—cool and inviting—but my chest felt tight. Marco waved at me from the pool, and I swear I forgot how to human. Then I saw it: a massive bowl of cut fruit on the patio table, papaya chunks gleaming orange and impossibly foreign-looking.

"What IS that?" Marco called out, pulling himself up to sit on the edge. "Nobody's gonna eat that weird fruit."

Something in me snapped. Maybe it was the humidity, maybe it was the fact that my abuela always kept papaya in the house, or maybe I was just tired of feeling invisible. But I found myself marching over to the table, grabbing a piece of papaya with my fingers, and popping it into my mouth.

"It's papaya," I said, swallowing the sweet, musky flavor. "And it's bomb, actually. You're just uncultured."

The entire pool area went silent. Then Marco laughed—actually laughed—and the tension shattered like glass. "No way. For real? Let me try it then."

Before I knew it, half the party was trying papaya, making faces, laughing at each other's reactions. Marco ended up beside me at the table, fruit juice on his chin, asking if I wanted to go swimming with him.

"Bet," I said, stepping out of my flip-flops.

As I dove into the cool water, I realized something: being myself wasn't as terrifying as I'd built it up in my head. And papaya? Turns out it's a total conversation starter.
