Papaya Summer
Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in the frizzy mess that had once been sleek waves. The humidity at her aunt's beach house in Florida was absolutely destroying her hair, and tomorrow was the beach party that everyone from school would be posting about.
"Just use some coconut oil,"
her cousin Jasmine called from the hallway. "It worked on my hair last summer."
Maya sighed and grabbed the jar from the bathroom counter. As she smoothed the oil through her curls, her iPhone buzzed with a notification from Caleb. The boy she'd been crushing on since seventh grade had finally replied to her story about the sunset.
*That view is insane,* he'd written. *Wish I was there.*
Her stomach did that weird flip thing. This was it — her chance to finally make a move before senior year started and everything changed.
The next morning, Maya stood in front of the beachside fruit stand, scrolling through Caleb's Instagram while waiting for her smoothie. The vendor handed her a cup with a funky orange fruit she'd never seen before.
"Papaya," the vendor said with a wink. "Good for your skin, your hair, your love life."
Maya almost choked on her first sip. But then she noticed something — Caleb's recent post was from the exact same beach, just two days ago. He was staying at his grandma's condo two streets over.
Her hands shook as she typed: *Hey! I think I'm staying two streets from you. Want to meet up?*
*Yesss,* came the reply almost instantly. *Palm tree near the boardwalk in 10?*
Maya's heart pounded as she checked her reflection one more time. The coconut oil had actually worked — her curls were defined and shiny, not frizzy anymore. The papaya smoothie was delicious. And somehow, everything was falling into place.
She found Caleb waiting under the swaying palm trees, looking exactly like his photos but somehow better in person. "Your hair looks great," he said instead of hello.
And as they walked toward the water, Maya realized that sometimes the most perfect moments happen when you stop trying so hard to control everything.
