Papaya Summer

The humidity was thick enough to chew on. I stood in the corner of Ty's backyard party, nursing a flat soda and feeling like the world's biggest loser while everyone else seemed to be living their best lives. That's when I saw her—Maya, leaning against a palm tree like she owned the whole coastline.

"You look like you're hiding from something," she said, suddenly beside me. Lightning flashed somewhere behind her eyes. Or maybe that was just my anxiety talking.

"Just hiding from Brad," I admitted. "He's been spreading total bull about me and Sarah since sophomore year."

Maya rolled her eyes. "Brad's got the emotional intelligence of a garden gnome. Ignore him."

She reached into her cooler and pulled out this weird orange fruit. "Ever tried papaya?"

"Uh, no?"

"Then you're living life wrong." She sliced it open with a pocket knife, and the inside looked like something alien but kind of beautiful. "First time for everything, right?"

I took a bite. It tasted like sunshine and mistakes, but somehow that was perfect.

"So," Maya said, like we'd been friends forever. "What's your story?"

And there it was—that lightning-strike moment when someone actually wants to know you. Not the version they've heard through rumors, not the fake one you present to survive high school, but the real you.

"I don't have one," I said. "Not yet."

She smiled. "Then we'd better start writing one."

Brad drunkenly stumbled by and made some snide comment, but for the first time, his words bounced off me like nothing. I was too busy tasting papaya for the first time and realizing that maybe, just maybe, I didn't have to be the quiet kid in the corner anymore.

Sometimes the best stories start with someone handing you a piece of fruit and saying, "Try this."
