Papaya Summer
Maya's summer job at Tropical Swirls was supposed to be chill — just blending fruit and pretending to know what she was doing with her life. But when Connor from chemistry walked in, her brain short-circuited.
"Yo, can I get the special?" he asked, leaning against the counter like he owned it.
"The Papaya Sunset?" Maya's voice squeaked. High-pitched. Mortifying. "Yeah, it's... it's really good."
She grabbed the papaya, chopping way faster than necessary. Her orange uniform shirt was already stained from three other orders today. Whatever.
"You're Maya, right? From Mr. Harrison's class?" Connor was still there. Why was he still there?
"Yeah! I mean, yeah, that's me." She poured the orange juice. "You're... Connor. Obviously."
Smooth. Really smooth.
Her phone buzzed — her best friend Liv: IS THAT CONNOR? ASK HIM TO HANGOUT.
The blender drowned out her thoughts. Papaya and orange swirled together, weirdly pretty. Like something aesthetic for her finsta.
And that's when it happened.
The service dog from the table outside — a tiny terrier thing — somehow got loose. It bounded in like it owned the place, jumping at Connor's legs. Connor jumped back. The papaya-orange smoothie went flying.
Orange everywhere. All over Connor's white tee. All over the floor. Maya wanted to die.
"Oh my god, I am SO sorry —"
But Connor was laughing. Actually laughing. "Bro, that's legendary."
The dog's owner rushed in, apologizing, but Connor just kept grinning at Maya, orange dripping from his chin.
"So," he said, "you owe me a smoothie now. And maybe we could hang? Without the dog drama?"
Maya's face burned. But she found herself grinning back.
"Yeah. Yeah, I can make that happen."
Her phone buzzed again: I SAW THAT. DEETS. NOW.
The papaya mixture on the floor reflected the overhead lights. Maya grabbed a mop, her heart still racing. Worst first impression ever. But somehow, also the best.
