Papaya Summer

My palms were sweating like crazy. First day at the tropical-themed smoothie shop, and I'd already managed to get **spinach** stuck in my teeth during the morning staff meeting. Ms. Rodriguez, the manager with way too much enthusiasm, had introduced me to everyone as "our new smoothie artist" while I stood there grinning like an idiot with green stuff in my smile.

"Don't worry, sweetie," whispered Mia, the girl with electric blue hair and three nose rings. "Happened to me on my first day too. Except I had **orange** pulp all over my chin."

I felt slightly better. Until Tyler walked in. Tyler with the perfect jawline and the vintage basketball jerseys. Tyler who I'd been crushing on since sophomore year but had never actually spoken to.

"What's good?" he asked, leaning against the counter like he owned the place.

My brain short-circuited. "The... uh... **papaya** Paradise?"

"Cool. Make it spicy." He winked.

*Make it spicy?* What did that even mean? I threw in some jalapeños, hoped for the best, and prayed my hands would stop shaking.

The real disaster happened during the lunch rush. I was reaching for the blender when someone knocked their vintage **hat** off the rack. I lunged to catch it, but my foot caught on a wet floor sign. I went down hard, smoothie ingredients exploding everywhere. Orange juice. Spinach leaves. Chunks of papaya sliding across the floor like a fruity disaster scene.

Tyler was standing right there. He extended a hand.

"You okay?"

"Never better," I lied, face burning hotter than the jalapeños I'd just pulverized.

He pulled me up, laughing. "That was honestly epic. 10 out of 10 for dramatic execution."

Mia appeared with a mop. "New record, guys. Three minutes in and she's already made her mark. Literally."

By the time my shift ended, I smelled like a fruit salad gone wrong, my apron was stained three different shades of disaster, and I was pretty sure I'd never live this down. But Tyler had asked for my number. And Mia had invited me to hang out after work.

Sometimes the worst days turn into the best stories. And sometimes, just sometimes, you find your people in the most unexpected ways—even if it takes falling face-first into a blender to get there.
