Papaya Summer

The August heat hit like a wall as I sprinted across the scorching asphalt, running late for what could be the most important social event of my entire fifteen years. Coach Martinez's padel tournament——the ultimate summer showdown where reputations were made or destroyed in a single afternoon.

My golden retriever, Buster, chased alongside me, his tongue flopping out like he knew exactly what was at stake. "Go home, buddy," I panted, but he just wagged his tail harder.

At the community courts, the scene was already popping. Everyone who mattered was there——Tyler flashing his new serve, Chloe's perfect outfit catching sunlight, the whole social hierarchy playing out on acrylic blue. I grabbed my racket, heart hammering harder than the ball would.

"You're up, kid," Tyler called, grinning like he'd already won.

First point. I focused on the ball, my palm slick with sweat. The rubber grip slipped. Just a little, but enough. My return sailed into the fence. Laughter rippled through the spectators——not mean, exactly, but definitely amused.

Second game. I adjusted my grip, blocked out everything except the yellow ball blurring back and forth. My shots found their rhythm. Tyler's grin faded.

Third game. Tiebreaker. The court grew silent. This was it——the moment that could change everything about sophomore year.

I served. Ace.

I returned. Winner.

Game point hanging in the thick summer air like possibility itself.

After the match——after shaking hands with Tyler and surprising literally everyone including myself——I found myself sitting on the curb with Chloe, sharing the papaya her mom had packed. "Not bad," she said, flashing that smile that made my stomach do backflips. "Not bad at all."

Buster appeared from nowhere, nudging my hand like a congratulations. I took a bite of the sweet orange fruit, watching the palm trees sway against the purple twilight sky, and thought maybe——just maybe——fifteen wouldn't be so terrible after all.
