Papaya Summer
I stood frozen at the edge of Taylor's beach bash, my palm sweating around my iPhone like I was holding a bomb. Everyone else was living their best lives in the ocean, but I? I was doomscrolling through my feed, watching everyone post stories that made my FOMO hit different.
"Maya! You're literally missing everything!" Jordan yelled, doing a backflip into the waves.
My social battery was already at 2%. I'd spent the whole summer ghosting everyone, too caught up in my own overthinking to actually participate. But then Layla appeared, holding this alien-looking fruit like it was totally normal.
"Try this papaya," she insisted, shoving it at me. "It's literally life-changing."
"It looks like a science experiment gone wrong," I said, eyeing it suspiciously.
"First time trying something new?" She raised an eyebrow. "Or first time actually living?"
Ouch. That hit weirdly hard.
I took a bite. And froze. It was actually... incredible? Sweet and tangy and nothing like my usual safe choices.
"See?" Layla grinned. "Sometimes you gotta try the weird stuff."
My phone buzzed. Marcus—the guy I'd been lowkey crushing on all summer—had finally replied to my text from literally three weeks ago. My thumb hovered over the screen, heart racing like I was about to jump off a cliff.
Then Jordan splashed water at me. "Stop being addicted to your phone! We're swimming!"
I looked at my iPhone, then at the ocean, then at the papaya in my other hand. Something clicked. I pocketed the phone—REALLY pocketed it, not just pretended to—and ran toward the waves.
The ocean swallowed my anxiety like it was nothing. When I emerged, Marcus was sitting on the sand, scrolling through his own phone. But this time? I didn't check mine. I just walked over, palm steadier than it'd been all summer.
"Hey," I said. "Wanna try some papaya?"
He looked up, confused, then smiled. "What's papaya?"
"Only literally the best thing ever," I said, sitting beside him as the sunset painted everything gold. "But fair warning—it looks like a radioactive experiment."
Sometimes the best stories start with the weirdest choices. Including trying strange fruit and finally putting down your phone.
