Papaya Summer
Maya's fifteenth summer wasn't supposed to involve holding a squishy, alien-looking fruit while her ex-best-friend-now-crush-Jason watched from across the pool. But here she was.
"It's literally a papaya," Chloe said, flipping perfect beach waves. "Health influencers swear by them. Superfood. Vitamins for days."
Maya inwardly groaned. Chloe had returned from summer camp transformed into someone who said "literally" every three seconds and cared about antioxidants. Meanwhile, Maya had spent three months working at her aunt's pet store, developing a solid allergy to small talk.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket - her mom's daily reminder text. TAKE YOUR VITAMIN D GUMMY!!! (three exclamation points meant serious).
"So," Jason said, suddenly beside her. His hair was wet from the pool, darker than usual. "You gonna try it?"
Maya's stomach did that embarrassing flutter thing. "The papaya? I don't know. It looks... suspicious."
He laughed. That genuine laugh that used to make math class bearable. "That's Maya. Still suspicious of anything that didn't come with nutrition facts printed on the package."
"Hey, I embrace my cautious nature."
"Remember when you refused to touch my dog because you thought it was judging you?"
"Buster WAS judging me. Those eyes. They saw too much."
Jason grinned. "I still can't believe you're scared of dogs."
"Not scared. Respectful of their opinionated gaze."
They stood there, the papaya between them like some weird peace offering. This was the thing about ex-best-friends-you-secretly-loved — the ease. The comfortable rhythm of inside jokes that still fit.
Chloe appeared with a dramatically sliced papaya. "Try it! It's like... if fruit had an aesthetic, this would be it."
Maya took a slice. Jason took one too. Their fingers brushed.
Electric. Cable-knit-sweater warm. The kind of moment that felt like it should be in a coming-of-age movie, complete with indie soundtrack and golden lighting.
She bit into it. Sweet. Strange. Nothing like she expected. But not bad.
"Well?" Jason asked, studying her face with that intensity that made her forget how to breathe sometimes.
"Actually... kind of amazing."
"Yeah?" He stepped closer. "Maybe some things are worth trying, even if they're weird and unfamiliar and you have absolutely no idea what you're doing."
Maya's heart hammered. Was he still talking about papaya?
"I need water," she blurted, because nerves made her weird.
Jason laughed again, but softer this time. "I'll go with you."
As they walked toward the refreshment table, Chloe shouted, "DON'T FORGET TO STAY HYDRATED!" and Maya didn't even cringe.
Some things were changing. Some things were staying exactly the same. And maybe papaya-tasting summer nights weren't so bad after all.
