Papaya Stains & Party Hats

Maya's hands were literally shaking as she adjusted the stupid neon construction hat her cousin forced on her. "It's a RAGER, cuz, you gotta COMMIT," Genesis had said before disappearing into the throng of seniors. Maya, a lowly sophomore, was already regretting coming. This wasn't her vibe. She was more goldfish bowl than ocean β€” small, contained, safe.

Then she saw him. Lucas. The one with the devastating smile and that damn ease in his skin. He was holding court near the snacks, looking like he'd been born at parties like this. Maya's stomach did that full flippy thing it always did when he was near.

She gravitated toward the food table because obviously, that's where awkward people go to look busy. Someone had brought these fancy papaya cubes on tiny skewers. Maya had never even HAD papaya. Who brought papaya to a high school house party? Apparently, rich kids with parents who traveled to Bali for winter break.

"Weird choice, right?"

Maya jumped. Lucas. Standing RIGHT THERE. Up close, she could see a tiny freckle above his left eyebrow.

"I was literally just thinking that," she said, trying to sound chill and failing. "Like, is this a party or a spa?"

He laughed. Actually laughed. "You're funny. I'm Lucas."

"Maya."

"Maya with the construction hat." He grinned. "I dig it. It's bold."

Suddenly, something brushed her ankle. She looked down β€” a cat. Some random calico that must belong to Genesis's neighbors. It wove between her legs like it owned her.

"Oh my god, are you a cat whisperer?" Lucas asked.

"I literally don't even know whose cat that isβ€”"

The cat chose that moment to JUMP onto the snack table. Chaos. Papaya skewers went flying. The cat landed in a bowl of chips, looking entirely unbothered.

Everyone turned. Maya wanted to melt into the floor, but Lucas? Lucas was laughing so hard he couldn't breathe.

"That cat is a total legend," he said. "You know what my dog would do in this situation? Cower in the corner. This cat? This cat owns the place. That cat is main character energy."

Maya found herself giggling. The embarrassment didn't vanish, but it shrunk. Something loosened in her chest.

"Your dog sounds like a coward," she said.

"He IS. But he's my coward."

They ended up on the front steps together, watching the cat lick papaya juice off its paw like it was gourmet. Maya's hat was still ridiculous. Her social standing remained questionable. But Lucas had asked for her number, and for the first time, she didn't feel like a goldfish swimming in anxious circles.

She felt like someone who might actually belong in the ocean.
