Papaya Stains and Second Chances

Maya's hair was supposed to be sunset orange. Instead, it looked like a traffic cone had exploded on her head.

"It's bold," her best friend Chloe said, which was code for "you look like a human highlighter."

Maya sighed, staring at her reflection. Three hours of bleaching and dyeing, and now she had to face Jake's party looking like she'd personally attacked a bottle of Fanta. Her palms were already sweating just thinking about it.

The doorbell rang. It was Chloe, wearing a crop top and holding a bag of emergency supplies. "We're gonna fix this. Or we're gonna own it."

They spent an hour experimenting with different styles, but nothing worked. Maya felt like a zombie—dead inside, shambling toward social suicide. Her mom poked her head in, offering papaya slices like they were some kind of magical cure.

"Honey, maybe wash it out?" her mom suggested, setting the fruit on Maya's desk.

"I can't. It's permanent dye."

"Then own it," Chloe said. "Orange hair? That's a personality."

Maya stared at the papaya. Something clicked. She grabbed her phone and texted Jake: "Coming fashionably late.警示: I'm serving looks tonight."

When they walked in, the music thumping and people already dancing, Maya spotted Jake immediately. He was wearing that vintage Jurassic Park shirt he always wore. His eyes widened when he saw her.

For a second, Maya wanted to hide. Then she remembered what Chloe said. Own it.

She flipped her orange hair. "Like the new aesthetic? It's called 'I don't care what anyone thinks.'"

Jake laughed, genuine and surprised. "Honestly? It's kind of epic. You're like, the only person here who actually looks interesting."

They spent the rest of the night on the back patio, talking about zombie movies and how they both hated coconut water. Maya's palms stopped sweating. Her hair wasn't a mistake anymore—it was her.

Later, eating the forgotten papaya slices in her kitchen, Chloe grinned. "Told you. Orange hair? That's a personality."
