Papaya stained Summer
The chlorine smell hit me before I even saw the pool. I stood by the gate, adjusting my hat for the thousandth time, trying to look casual instead of terrified. My hair was doing that thing where it defied physics and humidity simultaneously, and no amount of hat adjustment could fix it.
Inside, everyone was already in the water. Jessica, the human embodiment of effortless perfection, floated on an inflatable unicorn while somehow still managing to look elegant. Her hair was slicked back in that way that looks intentional rather than like you just emerged from the ocean.
"Hey! You made it!" someone called. I froze. Should I take off the hat? Would my hair somehow be worse with hat-hair than without?
My pocket buzzed. My iPhone screen lit up with a notification from my group chat: "weirdo party status report??" My fingers hovered over the keyboard. What could I even say? That I was standing outside a pool party like a creeper because I was terrified of messing up my hair?
"You coming in or what?" Jessica called from her unicorn.
I took a breath. I pulled off the hat. My hair sprang out in approximately twelve directions. Whatever.
But then—the worst thing that could happen, happened. I stepped forward, and my foot caught on something. I didn't fall into the pool. No, I fell into a fruit platter. Specifically, into a bowl of cut papaya.
Everyone stared. Papaya juice dripped from my hair. My shirt was stained. I felt like I might die.
Then Jessica started laughing. Not mean laughing—like, actual laughter. "Oh my god, that is literally the most extra thing I've ever seen."
Someone tossed me a towel. "Bro, you smell like a tropical vacation now."
My iPhone buzzed again. I took a photo of my papaya-covered reflection and sent it to the group chat with the caption: "0/10 would not recommend papaya conditioning treatment."
The responses were instant. "LEGEND," "iconic," "wait is that jess's party??"
I jumped in the pool. Papaya washed away, but something else stayed. Maybe being perfect wasn't the point. Maybe being the person who falls into fruit with zero chill was actually kind of iconic.
