Papaya Spy Protocol

Maya's cat Sphinx sat on her desk, judging her workout supplement stash. "You're taking that vitamin C pack again?" her best friend Kai texted. "You know it doesn't actually make you cooler."

"Shut up," Maya typed back, but her fingers hesitated over the papaya smoothie recipe on her phone. Her mom had been obsessed with papaya everything since their trip to Brazil last summer — "It's in your blood, mija!" — but Maya still felt like an impostor whenever she tried to lean into her Brazilian heritage. The kids at school just saw a white-passing girl with weird lunch allergies.

The spy mission was supposed to fix that. Well, not a REAL spy mission. Just Maya trying to lowkey figure out how to talk to Lucas, the Brazilian exchange student in AP Bio, without being totally awkward. She'd been watching his Instagram stories like a total stalker, decoding every emoji like they were ancient riddles. The Sphinx emoji had appeared three times this week. Was it a sign? A test?

"You're literally overthinking this," Kai said when they met at the boba place after school. "Just ask him about the papaya emoji on his story from yesterday."

"I can't just —"

"You're acting like this is some Sphinx riddle you have to solve," Kai rolled their eyes. "He posted a pic of papaya at the grocery store. It's not that deep."

But Maya couldn't shake the feeling that everything was a test. Her cat Sphinx meowed at her from the windowsill as she stress-ate a papaya gummy vitamin. The next day, she finally sat next to Lucas in bio, heart hammering.

"Hey," she managed, "I saw your story about the papaya. My mom's been obsessed with papaya everything lately."

Lucas lit up. "Dude, yes! My grandmother makes this amazing papaya cream, do you know it?"

"Actually yeah," Maya said, and for the first time, she didn't feel like she was pretending. "My mom tried to make it once and literally set off the smoke alarm."

Lucas laughed, and Maya realized sometimes the riddles we create in our heads have simple answers. Sphinx purred from her phone background, and Maya finally felt like she could stop spying and start living.
