Papaya's Riddle

My name is Papaya. Yeah, like the fruit. My parents thought they were being "unique" — cringe, I know. But tonight, standing at the edge of Maya's pool party, watching everyone else having the time of their lives while I hugged the wall like a sentient adhesive, I felt more like a papaya than ever: weird, unfamiliar, and definitely not fitting in.

Then I saw him — Jordan, leaning against the concrete **sphinx** statue that Maya's mom had imported from Egypt (or, more likely, from a weird garden store in the valley). The sphinx's stone face seemed to be judging my awkwardness, its enigmatic smile mocking my inability to just jump in the **water** already.

"You gonna stand there all night or actually join the party?" Jordan appeared beside me, holding two sodas. His presence made my stomach do that annoying fluttery thing.

"I'm... observing. From a tactical distance."

"Weird flex, but okay." His grin was lopsided, perfect. "My dog Bean would love you. He hides under the bed during parties too."

"Your **dog** is my spirit animal."

"Want to meet him? He's in the house." He raised an eyebrow. "Or we could start **swimming**. Fair warning: I splash ruthlessly."

I looked at the sphinx again. Its riddle echoed in my head: *What happens when you finally take the jump?*

"Bean can wait," I said, slipping off my sandals. "But you're going down."

The cannon splash was legendary. The cold water swallowed me, and when I surfaced, sputtering and laughing, Jordan was already grinning. For once, Papaya didn't feel like a weird fruit name. It felt like the beginning of something — something real, something brave.

The sphinx's stone smile finally made sense. Being mysterious wasn't about hiding. It was about becoming. And I? I was finally diving in.
