Papaya Protocol

The papaya sat on the kitchen counter like a radioactive grenade, and I was about to pull the pin.

"Dude, you're not actually gonna eat that," Marcus said, scrolling through his phone with practiced boredom. "That TikTok challenge is literally for people with no survival instinct."

"It's for the 'gram," I lied, though my stomach was already staging a protest. The truth? I was new to Creekwood High, and this was my ticket in. Eat the weird fruit, become a legend.

I sliced into the papaya. It smelled like someone dissolved a gummy bear in gasoline.

"Hard pass," said Chloe, who I'd been crushing on for approximately three weeks. She was wearing this oversized orange beanie that somehow worked with her whole indie-art-kid vibe. "That's giving 'I'm trying too hard' energy."

My face burned. I grabbed the nearest leaf of spinach from the salad bowl—because apparently, you're supposed to eat them together? The internet had led me astray before, but never this spectacularly wrong.

Then disaster struck. My sister's cat, Pancakes, launched herself from the refrigerator top like a fuzzy assassin, swiping at the papaya slice. The fruit went airborne. Spinach scattered like green confetti. And somehow, in the chaos, the vintage bucket hat I'd been wearing all day—my lucky charm, my security blanket—slipped off and landed directly in the punch bowl.

The room went dead silent.

Then Chloe started laughing. Not mean laughing. Like, actually laughing.

"Oh my god," she wheezed. "Your hat. The punch. The CAT." She wiped her eyes. "That was literally the most awkward thing I've ever witnessed, and I respect it."

Marcus looked up from his phone. "Okay, that was kinda legendary. Not gonna lie."

"Smoothie?" someone else offered, pointing to the blender on the counter.

"Let's never speak of this again," I said, fishing my hat out of the punch. But for the first time since moving here, I wasn't the new kid anymore. I was just the guy who lost a fight to a papaya and a cat named Pancakes.

And honestly? That was way cooler.
