Papaya Protocol

papayacathat

Maya stood outside Jayden's house, clutching the papaya like it was a grenade. Her mom had insisted she bring 'something healthier than those death chips' to the party. Now here she was, sixteen years old, holding tropical fruit while bass thumped through the garage door.

She adjusted the vintage bucket hat she'd spent forty minutes positioning perfectly. It was supposed to scream artsy indie kid, but so far it mostly screamed I'm trying too hard.

'Yo, Maya!' Naomi waved from the driveway. 'You actually came.'

Maya's heart did that embarrassing flutter thing. 'Yeah. Brought... provisions.' She held up the papaya like an idiot.

Naomi stared at it for three solid seconds. 'Is that a papaya?'

'My mom's idea.' Maya felt her face heating up. 'I can just throw it in the bushes—'

'No way, that's iconic.' Naomi grabbed Maya's free hand. 'Come on. Tyler's been asking about you all week.'

Inside, the air smelled like cheap cologne and anxiety. Maya spotted him immediately—Tyler in his corner throne, holding court like he owned the place. She took a breath, adjusted her hat, and prepared to play the role of Cool Girl Who Wasn't Nervous At All.

Then something orange streaked past her legs.

A cat. A genuinely confused-looking tabby had somehow infiltrated the party. It bolted toward Tyler, skidding on the laminate floor, and launched itself directly onto his lap—claws fully extended.

Tyler shrieked. Like, actually shrieked.

The room went silent. Then everyone was losing it, doubled over, howling. The legendary Tyler, taken down by a housecat.

Maya's papaya slipped from her fingers. It rolled across the floor and stopped perfectly at Tyler's feet.

'Is that...' someone wheezed, 'a papaya?'

'Maya brought provisions,' Naomi called from somewhere behind her.

Tyler looked up, still holding the confused cat, eyes watering from either pain or laughter. 'Did you just defeat me with fruit and a feline?'

Maya adjusted her hat, finally grinning. 'Don't mess with the Papaya Protocol.'

The cat purred. Tyler laughed. And Maya—Maya finally felt like she could breathe.
