Papaya Protocol

Leo's vintage fedora wasn't just a hat—it was his transformation protocol. At fifteen, desperate to shed his middle-school nerd reputation, he'd spent fifty dollars of his birthday money on what he hoped would be his new identity: The Mysterious Leo.

Too bad his mom thought it made him look like a grandpa.

"You look adorable, mijo," she'd said, pinching his cheek. "Like a tiny detective."

Leo had adjusted the brim, trying to look mysterious instead of adorable. It wasn't working.

But the hat was phase one. Phase two was Operation Crush: gathering intel on Maya, the junior who sat behind him in bio and somehow made wearing a lab goggles look like a fashion statement. For three weeks, Leo had been conducting what he called "reconnaissance"—basically, sitting two tables away at lunch while carefully not staring at her.

Okay, maybe staring a little.

"You're not a spy," his best friend Dev had told him. "You're just weird with fruit."

This was because of phase three: Leo had discovered Maya's Instagram story from last summer, where she'd raved about trying papaya for the first time. Now he carried papaya everywhere like it was his personality's calling card.

"It's sophisticated," Leo insisted, breaking into a papaya in the cafeteria. "Exotic."

"It smells like feet," said Dev.

The hat slipped over his eyes. Leo pushed it back, heart pounding as Maya walked past their table. She stopped.

"Is that... papaya?"

Leo froze. His spy mission had been compromised. He was going to die alone, smelling like tropical fruit failure.

"Yeah," he managed. "Want some?"

Maya's eyes lit up. "I LOVE papaya. Nobody ever eats it here; they think it's weird."

Leo's brain short-circuited. She thought papaya was weird? But she was the one who'd posted about loving it.

"I brought extra," he heard himself say, sliding the container across the table.

Maya sat down. "I'm Maya, by the way."

"Leo."

"Nice hat, tiny detective."

Leo groaned, but Maya was grinning. And as they sat there sharing papaya like regular humans instead of spy and target, Leo realized maybe he didn't need a transformation protocol after all.

Though he did burn the hat the next week. Some things couldn't be saved.
