Papaya Protocol
Maya felt like a total spy at lunch table 4, secretly observing everyone while pretending to scroll TikTok. Being the new kid at Oak Creek High lowkey sucked — everyone already had their squads, their inside jokes, their unassigned assigned seats.
The corner seat by the window became her spot. That's where she met Buster, this scrawny dog that wandered onto campus every Tuesday like clockwork. Mrs. Grier, the world's most tired chemistry teacher, would shoo him away, but Buster always returned Maya's tentative waves with what looked suspiciously like a smirk.
"You're the new girl, right?" The voice belonged to Sarah, whose perfectly curated aesthetic screamed popular but whose eyes said something else. Something lonely. "I saw you talking to that dog. He's basically a campus celebrity at this point."
"Yeah, he's cool," Maya managed, trying to play it cool despite her heart doing gymnastics. "Better than some people here."
"Tell me about it." Sarah dropped her voice. "You know Jason Miller? That bull in AP Bio who thinks owning three Ralph Lauren polos makes him God's gift to Westbrook? He literally made Liam cry yesterday over a papaya. Like, who gets pressed over fruit?"
Maya blinked. "Wait, what?"
"Liam brings papaya chunks for lunch every day because his mom's obsessed with antioxidants or whatever. Jason decided that was grounds for a full-on character assassination." Sarah shook her head. "Anyway, I'm gonna sit here. If that's cool."
"Yeah," Maya said, something warm unfurling in her chest. "Yeah, it's cool."
Outside, Buster the dog trotted past, pausing to glance through the window with something like approval. Maya wasn't just spying on high school life anymore — she was actually living it. Operation: Papaya Protocol was officially in motion, and for the first time since moving to this suburban wasteland, she thought she might actually survive.
"So," Sarah said, pulling out a Tupperware container. "Wanna help me brainstorm ways to subtly destroy Jason's social standing? I'm thinking papaya-themed revenge."
Maya grinned. "I'm literally in."
