Papaya Pool Party

pooldogpapayafriend

The invitation sat on my desk like a dare: **POOL** PARTY at Jessica's house. Saturday. 3 PM. My stomach did that thing where it tries to exit through your throat. Jessica, who somehow made everything look effortless, had invited me. Me, Maya, who once tripped over nothing in the cafeteria and dropped her tray so spectacularly that someone started a slow clap.

My best friend Lena was already planning her outfit when she FaceTimed me. "Just wear that bikini from last summer. You looked fire in it."

"I looked like a potato trying to pass as a human," I muttered. But I knew I'd go.

Saturday arrived with my palms sweating through my phone case. Jessica's house was enormous, with an actual backyard and a pool that sparkled like something from a music video. People were already cannonballing when I arrived, their laughter mixing with Spotify's hottest summer anthems.

Then I saw it: a fruit tray with the most exotic thing I'd ever witnessed in person. Papaya. It looked like alien flesh, all orange and glistening. I'd never tried it—my family was more "apple and banana" people—but everyone else was eating it like it was no big deal.

"You gonna try some?" This tall guy with curly hair stood beside me, holding a plate. Tyler, from my history class. Cute Tyler.

"Uh, yeah. Totally." I loaded some onto my plate like I knew what I was doing. "Love this stuff."

First bite: Wrong move. The texture was like eating soap. My face did this involuntary scrunch thing that I could NOT control. Tyler raised an eyebrow.

"You good?"

"SO good," I choked out. "Just... intense flavor."

Then her **dog**—this tiny fluffy thing that looked like it should be in a purse—sprinted across the patio, barking at nothing. It collided with my legs at full velocity. My plate went flying. Papaya everywhere. On my new bikini. On Tyler's shoes. On Jessica's pristine pool deck.

The music kept playing but conversations stopped. Everyone staring. My face burned so hot I felt like I'd spontaneously combust.

But then Lena was there, already pulling me toward the **pool** itself. "Papaya incident, huh? Classic Maya. You coming, Tyler?"

Without waiting for an answer, she shoved both of us into the water.

When we surfaced, sputtering and laughing despite ourselves, I realized Tyler was grinning. "That was actually kind of legendary."

"Legendary disaster," I corrected.

"Nah," Lena called from the edge. "Just Maya being Maya. At least she didn't try to pretend papaya is good. That stuff tastes like disappointment."

Later, as we sat on pool chairs wrapped in towels watching the sunset, Tyler sitting beside me and actually talking to me like I was a normal human, I caught Lena's eye. She winked.

A **friend** who makes your embarrassing moments feel like adventures instead of failures? That's the real rare fruit here. And okay, maybe I'd try papaya again someday. But not today. Some risks could wait until Monday.
