Papaya Palms
My palms were sweating. Like, actually sweating - gross, right? I'd been staring at Leo's Instagram story for twenty minutes, and the party was in two hours. The cable from my router to the TV was still tangled across the living room floor because I'd been "going to fix it" since spring break.
Outside, my neighbor's palm tree cast these perfect Hawaiian shadows through the window, making my room look way cooler than it actually was. Meanwhile, I was internally spiraling about what to wear.
"Bella! Are you going or what?" My little brother appeared in my doorway with papaya juice all over his face. Mom's latest phase: "exotic fruits will expand their palates." Spoiler: They won't.
"I'm thinking," I said, even though I wasn't. I was overthinking.
Then our Golden Retriever, Buster, comes barreling down the hallway like a maniac, spots the rogue cable, and somehow manages to wrap it around his back leg while simultaneously stealing Ethan's juice cup. The chaos was instant - Buster dragging a router cable, papaya juice everywhere, my brother screaming like someone died.
And I just started laughing. Like, actually couldn't stop laughing.
Because suddenly none of it mattered. The cable could wait. Buster was definitely getting a bath. My palms were still sweaty, but I pulled myself together, threw on my favorite outfit, and went anyway.
Leo was there. We talked. It wasn't perfect or movie-magical or whatever - but it was real. And the weird thing is, now whenever I see papaya at the grocery store, I smile.
Sometimes the messy moments are the ones that actually matter.
