Papaya Palm Sweat

The papaya sat there like an exotic grenade on Kyle's grandmother's fancy serving tray, looking ridiculous among the chips and sodas. I'd never even seen one in real life, let alone tasted it, but Maya was already reaching for a wedge with that effortless confidence she made everything look easy.

"You've never had papaya?" She raised an eyebrow, and I felt my palms go sweaty against the red plastic cup. "Bro, it's literally fruit. Not rocket science."

"I'm more of a... pizza guy," I muttered, while Tyler and Jake talked baseball somewhere by the pool, their words about the Astros game floating over like background noise I was supposed to care about.

My iPhone buzzed in my pocket - probably Mom asking if I was having fun, which was ironic because I was absolutely not having fun. I was standing at a graduation party feeling like the most awkward person alive while everyone else seemed to have gotten the manual on how to be a normal teenager.

"Try it." Maya held out a wedge. Her fingernails were painted this perfect blue that matched her swimsuit, and I wondered how she made everything look so intentional while I was just improvising my way through social situations.

I took the papaya. It smelled weirdly sweet, like something tropical and unfamiliar. Took a bite. Chewed. Waited for it to be terrible.

"Well?" Maya grinned, and for a second I forgot about my sweaty palms and the baseball conversation and my phone buzzing and the fact that I was wearing last year's swimsuit.

"It's... actually kinda good?" The words came out surprised.

"Told you." She bumped my shoulder with hers. "You're too scared to try new stuff. That's your whole vibe."

"Is that my vibe?"

"That's totally your vibe." She grabbed another piece of papaya. "But it's chill. We can work on it."

My phone buzzed again and I ignored it, which felt like a small rebellion. The baseball game drifted into background noise. For once, I wasn't watching from the sidelines while everyone else knew how to play the game. I was just standing there eating papaya with Maya in her grandmother's backyard, and maybe that was enough.

"You want more?" she asked.

"Yeah," I said. "Actually, I do."
