Papaya Palm Protocol
The hat was ridiculous and I knew it. A neon pink cowboy hat that screamed 'I'm trying way too hard' to everyone at Tyler's bonfire party. But my cousin Chloe swore it was my signature look, and I was fourteen and didn't know better yet.
'You need to commit to the bit,' she'd said, shoving me toward the party. 'Own it.'
Easy for her to say. She wasn't the one wearing neon pink anything while the popular kids sat around the fire looking effortlessly perfect in their normal-people clothes.
Then I saw Maya by the fruit table, examining a papaya like it was an alien artifact. Maya, who I'd had a crush on since seventh grade. Maya, who once corrected the science teacher about quantum entanglement.
'What are you doing?' I asked, abandoning my post by the trees.
She looked up, eyes bright behind glasses. 'Have you ever actually tasted papaya? Like, really tasted it?'
'No?'
'Me neither.' She sliced it open with a plastic knife. 'I feel like everyone pretends to like it because it's exotic. But what if it's gross? What if we've all been collectively lying about papaya for generations?'
I laughed. 'That's your big philosophical question? Papaya trutherism?'
'It's important!' She held out a piece. 'Try it with me. If it's gross, we never speak of it again.'
I took it. Our fingers brushed. My palm went suddenly sweaty. Thanks, nervous system. Great timing.
We both bit down. The flavor was weird—musky sweet, almost peppery. We made identical faces.
'Okay so,' Maya said, swallowing, 'lowkey mid. Not gross, but not life-changing either.'
'Five out of ten,' I agreed. 'Would not rage-reevaluate my life choices over it.'
She smiled, and I swear my heart did something genuinely concerning in my chest. 'You know what's actually good though?' She pointed at my hat. 'The commitment. Most people would've taken it off by now.'
I touched the brim self-consciously. 'Yeah, well. My cousin's idea.'
'It works. It's brave.' She hesitated. 'You want to go look at the ocean? Away from the noise?'
'Absolutely.'
We walked toward the water, the bonfire crackling behind us, neon pink hat and all. Papaya experiment: inconclusive. The rest of the night? Just starting.
