Papaya Palm Protocol

The cafeteria social pyramid tilted dangerously today. Every table had its assigned place, and Leo definitely occupied the basement level—right next to the recycling bin.

"You need a rebrand," Marcus declared, stabbing at his lunch tray. "Something that says 'mysterious athlete' not 'guy who tripped over his own backpack yesterday.'"

Leo's palms started sweating. Marcus had been watching too many TikTok transformation videos. But when Maya walked past—actual Maya, who sat at the apex of the pyramid with her perfect hair and intimidatingly cool friends—Leo's brain turned into static.

"I've got it," Marcus whispered. "The exotic fruit angle. You bring papaya to school. Nobody eats papaya. It's weirdly confident."

So Leo found himself at Whole Foods, standing bewildered before a pile of alien-looking produce, clutching a suspiciously squishy papaya like it might explode. The cashier gave him a look that said everything about his life choices.

At school the next day, Maya ended up at his table because—holy universe intervention—the cafeteria was actually full for once.

"Is that... papaya?" she asked, like he'd brought a baby penguin to lunch.

"Yeah," Leo said, his voice cracking approximately three times. "I'm really into... health benefits?"

Maya picked up a piece, made direct eye contact, and ate it without flinching. "Bold choice. My cousin's a bear mascot at Disney and he says this fruit is underrated."

"Your cousin is a bear?"

"A person dressed as a bear, obviously." She smiled, and something in Leo's chest did a full gymnastics routine. "So, Leo the Papaya Guy, you coming to Jordan's party Saturday?"

He'd never been invited to a Jordan party before. Those parties existed in rumors, in legends, in the stratospheric layer of the pyramid where oxygen supposedly ran thin.

"Bear costume optional?" Leo heard himself say.

Maya laughed. An actual laugh. "Only if you bring more fruit."

That night, Leo texted Marcus: THE PLAN WORKED. Also, I need to buy six papayas.

The pyramid hadn't exactly collapsed—but maybe, just maybe, Leo had started climbing.
