Papaya Palm Prophecy
Maya's palms were sweating legit rivers as she gripped her iPhone, doomscrolling through Kai's Instagram for the forty-seventh time today. It was pathetic, really. She'd basically appointed herself as a certified social media spy at this point ā tracking his post likes, story views, and vague song lyrics like she was solving some cosmic mystery.
"You gonna stare at that screen all night or actually talk to him?" Zara nudged her, nearly making Maya drop her phone into the punch bowl.
"I'm not ready," Maya whispered. "What if I say something weird? What if Iā"
"What if you stop overthinking and just exist?" Zara rolled her eyes so hard it practically hurt.
The Fall Carnival was in full swing, and somehow Maya had let Zara drag her to the fortune teller booth. The lady there, Mrs. Chen (who usually worked in the main office), took Maya's hand and traced her palm with wrinkled fingers.
"Interesting," Mrs. Chen murmured, peering at Maya's hand lines. "You're hiding something. A secret admiration, perhaps?" Maya's face burned hotter than the papaya smoothie she'd clumsily spilled earlier that day. "But I see... fruit. Strange fruit."
"Papaya?" Maya blurted without thinking.
Mrs. Chen's eyes widened. "Yes. Papaya. This means you'll find connection in unexpected places."
Weirdly specific, but okay.
They walked toward the snack tables, and there was Kai, standing alone by the fruit skewers, holding a papaya wedge like it was some alien artifact. He caught Maya's eye and actually smiled.
"Hey," he said. "You know what's wild? I've never had papaya before. Is it good or is it a trap?"
Maya's palms stopped sweating. "It's... actually kinda perfect if you give it a chance."
"Yeah?" Kai grinned. "Wanna try it together?"
Sometimes the universe worked in mysterious, papaya-scented ways. And sometimes you didn't need to spy from the sidelines anymore. Sometimes you just had to show up.
