Papaya Orange Awakening

Maya stared at her phone screen, the 'typing...' bubble taunting her. Jordan hadn't replied for three hours. Three hours since Maya had accidentally posted the screenshot of their private conversation to her Close Friends story. The fallout had been immediate—Jordan had left their group chat, ignored her texts, and posted that cryptic TikTok audio about toxic friendships.

Maya's reflection in the bathroom mirror showed the exact same girl from yesterday—the one with waist-length, perfectly layered brown hair that everyone complimented. But suddenly, it felt like a costume. Like she'd been playing a role: the chill, reliable friend who never caused drama. The one who stayed in the background while Jordan shined.

She'd been the sidekick in their dynamic since seventh grade. And now, standing in her bathroom at 2 AM with a box of temporary dye she'd stolen from her sister's room, Maya decided she was done being background noise.

The color on the box said 'Sunset Orange,' but as she worked it through her hair in the harsh fluorescent lighting, she thought it looked more like that weird papaya Jordan had made them try at the farmers' market last summer. The one Jordan had claimed was 'totally life-changing' while Maya had pretended to love it, just like she pretended to love Jordan's obsession with making everything an aesthetic experience for their Instagram feeds.

When Maya washed out the dye and blow-dried her hair the next morning, it was definitely papaya orange. Bright, unmistakable, slightly ridiculous papaya orange. Her mom would freak. Her friends would definitely have thoughts.

But staring at her new reflection, Maya felt something she hadn't felt in years: like herself.

Her phone buzzed. Jordan, finally. 'can we talk?'

Maya typed back: 'sure but heads up my hair is orange now'

'WHAT'

'like papaya orange. also i'm done letting you decide what we do every weekend. also i actually hated that papaya you made us eat. that was the moment i should've said something'

Three dots danced. Then: 'omg. THANK YOU. i hated it too i was just trying to be cool like those tiktok girls'

Maya laughed out loud. 'so we're both fake'

'no. we're both learning. can you still come over later?'

Maya ran a hand through her papaya hair. It wasn't just hair anymore—it was the thing that had finally made her stop playing the supporting character in her own life. 'yeah. but we're eating whatever I want this time.'
