Papaya on the Cable
The party was already mid-energy when I slipped through the sliding glass door, my phone clutching at 2%. Someone had spilled fruit salad on the patio table, and there it was—a perfect papaya wedge, glowing like radioactive orange in the string lights.
"Hey!" I practically shouted at Jake, whose frat-house playlist was cutting in and out. "Your cable's loose!"
He blinked, all hoodie confidence and messy hair. "Huh?"
"The aux cable," I said, already kneeling beside the speaker system. "It's been yanked halfway out. That's why the music keeps glitching."
I pushed it back in, and suddenly Lizzo blasted through at full volume. Jake's eyes widened. "Dude. You just saved my life."
My palms were definitely sweating now. This was supposed to be casual. I was supposed to be chill. Instead, here I was fixing his stereo setup like I was working at Geek Squad or whatever.
Then his cat—that scrawny tabby that lived in the garage—came streaking through the crowd, tail puffed, probably spooked by the bass drop. It leaped onto the papaya-covered table and sent everything flying.
"CAT!" like three people screamed.
I burst out laughing. I couldn't help it. The night was already ridiculous, and now here was this orange-furred demon batting at papaya chunks while Jake tried to rescue his speaker system from fruit salad fallout.
Jake caught me laughing. He was grinning too, dopey and cute and totally unbothered by the chaos. "You think this is funny?"
"It's hilarious," I said. "Like, this whole night is a meme waiting to happen."
And then he said it—words that would rewrite my entire semester: "You're different. Like, actually different. Not in a bad way. In a... I want to hang out with you more way."
My heart did this complicated flip that felt like equal parts terror and thrill. The papaya mess could wait. The cable was secure. The cat had vanished. But something had just shifted between us, and honestly? I was ready to see where it went.
