Papaya Nights and Orange Skies

The papaya sat on the paper plate like an alien artifact. I stared at it, wondering who brings exotic fruit to a high school party anyway.

"Try it," said Taylor, the guy whose backyard we were all standing in. He had that confident smile that made everything seem like an adventure. "It's basically nature's candy."

I'm Cassie, and five minutes ago, I was ready to bail on this whole thing. My orange sundress felt too bright, too much, like I was trying too hard to fit in with Taylor's crowd. But then his grandpa's old dog - some scruffy terrier mix named Bandit - had trotted over and nudged my hand with his wet nose, and suddenly I wasn't the awkward new girl anymore.

"You gonna let Bandit be braver than you?" Taylor asked, raising an eyebrow. "Or are you gonna stick with your safe little bubble?"

His words stung more than he meant them to. Everyone knew I'd spent freshman year playing it safe, staying in my lane, never taking risks. But something about the orange sunset painting the sky, something about the way Taylor looked at me like he actually saw me...

I picked up a piece of papaya. It was soft and strange between my fingers.

"That's such bull," Chloe said from behind her red solo cup. "She's not gonna do it."

"Watch me," I said, and popped it into my mouth.

The flavor exploded - sweet and musky and nothing like I expected. Bandit chose that moment to knock over the snack table with his tail, sending chips flying everywhere. Taylor started laughing, and then I was laughing too, and suddenly Chloe was rolling her eyes but smiling, and...

And just like that, I wasn't on the outside anymore.

"Told you," Taylor said, handing me a napkin. "Nature's candy."

"Okay, okay," I said, wiping sticky juice from my chin. "You were right."

"I usually am." His smile softened. "Hey, Cassie?"

"Yeah?"

"Glad you came tonight."

The sky burned orange above us as I smiled back, feeling something shift inside me. Maybe risks weren't so scary after all. Maybe sometimes you just had to taste the papaya.
