Papaya Nights and iPhone Lights
Maya's iPhone screen glowed in the dark bedroom, illuminating her flushed cheeks. 16 years old and stuck at home on a Friday night while her friends were at Tyler's party. The FOMO was real—Snapchat stories showed everyone dancing, laughing, living their best lives without her.
"Honey, I made you something," her mom said, appearing in the doorway with a bowl of sliced papaya. "It's got tons of vitamin C, and you need to boost your immune system."
Maya groaned but accepted the bowl. The papaya sat there like an exotic insult—she'd never even seen this fruit in their house before. "Mom, nobody eats papaya. This is weird."
"It's good for you. Just try it." Her mom set down the vitamin supplements too. "Take these with water."
Maya scrolled through Instagram while picking at the fruit. To her surprise, the papaya wasn't terrible—sweet, kind of tropical. Outside her window, the first storm flicker of lightning painted the sky purple.
Her phone buzzed. Jayden had finally texted back: "hey wish u were here :("
Her fingers hovered over the screen. For weeks, she'd been crushing on him, analyzing every text, every Instagram story. But another lightning crack shook the house, and suddenly her phone went black. Power outage.
In the sudden quiet, Maya kept eating the papaya in the dark. No notifications. No FOMO. No overanalyzing Jayden's feelings. Just the sound of rain and her own thoughts. Maybe this sick night wasn't so bad. Maybe she needed this break from constantly performing for her phone.
"Mom?" she called out. "This papaya is actually... kinda good."
Sometimes the universe hits you with literal lightning to help you see what actually matters.
