Papaya Mission Protocol
The vitamin C supplement sat on my tongue like a judgmental chalk tablet. Mom's latest health phase meant no more Cinnamon Toast Crunch for breakfast—now it was papaya chunks with chia seeds.
"Your skin is glowing, Leo!" she called out as I grabbed my backpack. "The antioxidants are working!"
My skin wasn't glowing. I was glowing with embarrassment.
At lunch, I sat with my usual crew—Marcus, who spent 90% of his time looking at his own reflection in cafeteria spoons, and Priya, who had already mastered the art of making fun of people without them realizing it.
"What's THAT?" Marcus pointed at my Tupperware like it was radioactive.
"Papaya," I muttered. "My mom's going through this wellness kick."
Priya squinted at the orange cubes. "Looks like alien brain matter."
"Thanks, Priya. That really helps."
But the real humiliation came when Sasha Velasquez walked past our table. Sasha Velasquez, who wore combat boots with sundresses and quoted poetry in English class. Sasha Velasquez, who I'd been secretly spy-ing on for three weeks—not in a creepy way, just... observing. Like, from a distance. With binoculars. That one time. Okay, maybe a little creepy.
She stopped at our table. Her eyes landed on my lunch.
"Is that... papaya?"
My brain short-circuited. "Uh. Yeah. Want some?"
Sasha actually smiled. "My abuela makes papaya smoothies every morning. It's, like, the only thing that gets me through first period AP Chem."
Wait—Sasha Velasquez, ethereal poet goddess, drank papaya smoothies?
"Really?" I asked, trying to play it cool. "My mom's obsessed with health stuff. I've got this whole vitamin regimen happening now. It's... actually kind of working?"
Lie. Total lie. But Sasha was still standing there.
"That's actually really cool," she said. "Most guys just eat pizza and complain about feeling gross. This is... thoughtful."
I felt like I'd just uncovered a secret level in a video game. All this time, I'd been hiding my embarrassing lunch, when really—
"Hey," Sasha said, fidgeting with the strap of her messenger bag. "I'm doing this open mic thing on Friday. You should come. I'm reading this piece about... I don't know, trying to be someone you're not, and then realizing that person isn't so bad."
My heart did this thing where it forgot how to beat.
"I'd love to," I heard myself say.
As Sasha walked away, Marcus and Priya stared at me like I'd just revealed I was secretly an alien.
"What just happened?" Priya demanded.
I looked down at my papaya, suddenly seeing it differently. Maybe Mom's wellness kick wasn't punishment. Maybe it was just... me now. And maybe that was okay.
"I think," I said slowly, "I just got asked to open mic night. By Sasha Velasquez."
Marcus dropped his fork. "DUDE."
"Yeah," I agreed, popping a papaya cube into my mouth. "Yeah."
