Papaya Lips and Zombie Eyes

Maya stared at her reflection, hair curling iron held hostage in one hand, the other clutching her iPhone like it was her only lifeline. The group chat was blowing up.

"You're going, right?" "Everyone's gonna be there." "Tyler's asking about u."

Three hours of sleep. Two energy drinks. One chance to make an impression at Jake's party. Maya felt like a zombie—literally stumbling through her morning routine, dark circles under her eyes that no concealer could fix.

She'd spent the night before doomscrolling, watching those "get ready with me" videos where girls with perfect skin and effortless waves made it look easy. Meanwhile, her hair had decided to stage a rebellion, frizzing out in every direction except the one she wanted.

"Whatever," she muttered, releasing a curl that looked more like a question mark than a spiral. "Natural texture is in, right?"

Her mom poked her head in. "Honey, I made you that papaya smoothie you like."

Maya's stomach did a nervous flip. "Can't. Meeting Sarah at the mall."

"You sure? It's got that—"

"Gotta go!" Maya grabbed her bag, smoothie untouched on the counter. Because god forbid she show up to Jake's party with papaya breath. The social hierarchy was ruthless enough without adding "tropical fruit girl" to her middle school reputation.

At the party, she pressed herself against the wall, iPhone glued to her hand like it was an extension of her body. Everyone was talking, laughing, dancing like they didn't have a care in the world. Meanwhile, Maya was analyzing every interaction, calculating risks, overthinking whether saying hi to Jake would make her look desperate or confident.

Then her phone died.

Panic surged. She was suddenly weaponless, exposed, forced to exist in the moment without her digital armor. And that's when Jake walked over, scratching his messy hair, looking kind of like a zombie himself.

"Hey," he said. "I've been trying to catch your eye all night."

Maya blinked. "Wait, really?"

"Yeah. Your friend Sarah said you like papaya? My mom's obsessed with this papaya farm down in—"

Maya burst out laughing. The tension evaporated. Here she was, worrying about her hair and her phone and whether she looked cool enough, while Jake was just some guy who wanted to talk about fruit farms with his hair a mess and circles under his eyes.

"Papaya's actually my favorite," she admitted.

"No way," Jake grinned. "Same."

And just like that, Maya wasn't a zombie anymore. She was just a girl with frizzy hair, a dead phone, and a papaya connection, finally waking up to what actually mattered.
