Papaya Lips and Best Friends
Maya's phone buzzed with a text from Sofia, her best friend since kindergarten: cafeteria 5 mins. Don't bail on me again.
Maya groaned at her reflection. The new braces made her feel like a middle schooler, not a high school freshman. Her mom had packed her lunch—again—with that weird organic stuff nobody else ate. She shoved the container into her backpack.
The cafeteria hummed with overlapping conversations and the clatter of trays. Maya spotted Sofia at their usual table, dramatically examining her nails while偷 glancing at the popular crowd.
"So..." Sofia lowered her voice. "Jason finally noticed me today. Asked if I'm going to Skylar's party Friday."
"That's huge!" Maya genuinely smiled, even though her teeth hurt. "What'd you say?"
"That I'd be there. Obviously." Sofia flipped her hair. "But here's the thing—I need you to come too. As my wingwoman."
Maya's stomach twisted. "You know I'm not exactly party material. Plus my mom's got me on this healthy kick..."
"Dude, you're literally so much fun when you stop overthinking everything." Sofia reached across the table and squeezed Maya's hand. "Please? I can't go alone. What if Jason's there and I freeze up?"
Maya sighed. "Fine. But if things get awkward, I'm escaping through a bathroom window."
"Deal. Now what do you actually have for lunch? I saw you hiding that container like it was contraband."
Maya pulled out the Tupperware. Inside sat cubed papaya and fresh spinach leaves. Sofia's face scrunched up.
"Is that... rabbit food?"
"It's actually good," Maya lied, spearing a piece of papaya. The sweet, tropical flavor surprised her—okay, not a total lie. "My mom says the antioxidants will make my skin glow."
"Your skin is already fine. You're just overthinking it again." Sofia stole a piece of papaya. "Okay, actually not bad. But maybe we can sneak some pizza before the party Friday?"
"Maybe." Maya smiled, genuinely this time. "As long as you promise to text Jason back. He's probably waiting."
Sofia's phone was already in her hand. "You're the best friend ever."
Maya ate another piece of papaya, spinach and all. Some things were weird, some things were hard, but maybe high school wouldn't be as terrible as she'd pictured. At least she wouldn't be doing it alone.
