Papaya Lightning

Maya adjusted her crop top for the seventeenth time, checking her reflection in the hallway mirror. The house party was already popping—music thrummed through the walls, laughter spilled from every room, and somewhere someone was definitely failing to be chill.

She grabbed a slice of pizza from a towering box pyramid and headed for the kitchen, where she spotted Liam—the guy she'd been lowkey obsessing over since Homecoming—standing near the fruit platter. Her stomach did that thing where it forgot how to exist.

"Hey," Maya said, then immediately questioned her entire life choices.

"Yo!" Liam's face lit up, making him look even cuter than usual. "Try this papaya stuff, it's actually fire."

Maya accepted the fork he offered, trying to look like someone who regularly ate exotic fruit at parties instead of hiding in her room watching Netflix. The papaya was... surprising. Kind of like if mango and melon had a baby that was way more confident than either of them.

"It's actually kind of sick," she admitted, and Liam's grin made her knees weak.

Just then, lightning flashed through the sliding glass doors, illuminating the backyard. A massive chocolate lab burst through the doggy door, barking like it owned the place, and sent the entire fruit platter flying.

"BRODY! NO!" someone screamed as the dog skidded across the spilled papaya and crashed into the kitchen island, taking down a stack of red solo cups like a furry bowling ball.

Maya died—actually passed away from secondhand embarrassment—as Liam helped clean up the mess. But instead of being weirded out, he was laughing so hard he could barely breathe.

"That's my dog," he said between gasps, wiping papaya from his jeans. "I'm so sorry, he's like a chaotic good wizard of destruction."

Maya found herself giggling, the tension melting away. "It's fine, my dog once ate my history project on ancient Egypt. He really had it out for the Great Pyramid."

Liam's eyes met hers, soft with something that made her chest feel too tight. Outside, thunder cracked as more lightning streaked across the sky, but for once, she wasn't worried about being awkward or saying the wrong thing.

"Want to get out of here?" Liam asked, voice dropping lower. "There's this spot by the creek where you can see the storm better."

Maya nodded, grabber her phone, and followed him out into the rain, thinking that maybe chaos wasn't always the worst thing in the world. Sometimes it was exactly what you needed to find your moment.
